This Colonial home in Sudbury, MA had elegant proportions but lacked the architectural character and personality the homeowners wanted. DFI Interiors set out to introduce focal points, warmth and layers of interest while respecting the traditional architecture of the residence.

In the family room, we designed an oversized custom built-in to anchor the space and transform a previously bare wall into a defining architectural feature. In the dining room, an antique fireplace mantel was introduced to create a sense of history and permanence—the kind of detail that makes a home feel as though it has evolved naturally over time.

Furnishings were selected with real family life in mind, balancing comfort and practicality with a more refined aesthetic. Family- and pet-friendly materials provide a versatile foundation, while colorful textiles, patterned fabrics, rugs, artwork and accessories bring energy, warmth and individuality to the rooms. Art and decorative objects were deliberately curated rather than used to fill every surface, allowing individual pieces and compositions to have presence.

Throughout the home, traditional and contemporary elements are intentionally layered. Custom millwork and antique architectural details sit comfortably alongside more transitional furnishings, expressive color, pattern and texture, creating interiors that feel collected rather than overly decorated.

The result is a warm, layered and sophisticated Colonial home that feels grounded in its architecture yet fresh and deeply personal—a transformation achieved through thoughtful interior design, custom millwork, furnishings, art and the details that give a home its character.
